Coach’s Corner
Are you what you eat?
I’ll never forget looking at my grandmother’s bathroom counter. It was filled stem to stern with her “pills” — more supplements than your average pharmacy. By no means is flooding your system with supplements just because Sally’s cousin’s brother’s trainer’s aunt’s husband suggested it an ideal scenario.
That brings up the real question: what should and shouldn’t you be using to support your body? There are some great supplement companies out there, and some not-so-great ones. Here at Strong, we partner with Thorne — quality products that our staff has personally tested and seen great results with. That said, it’s not the end-all, be-all.
When choosing a supplement brand, look at the quantity of active ingredients and how many additives are included. More is not always better — sometimes it’s just more. One thing I love about Thorne’s website is that each product page links to reputable medical sources, breaking down the pros and cons of key ingredients.
One of the biggest questions I hear is, “What should I take?” If you’re anything like me, less is more. So from a 10,000-foot view, here are two supplements that offer real benefits while keeping things simple. As always, consult a medical professional if you have any concerns before adding anything to your diet.
A Few Basics to Consider
Magnesium
Magnesium can (and should) first be sourced through food, but busy schedules often make that tough. It supports overall muscle and nervous system health, helps reduce cramps and soreness (thanks to those great Strong workouts), improves sleep, regulates the nervous system, and supports gut health. It comes in three primary forms:

It supports overall muscle and nervous system health, helps reduce cramps and soreness (thanks to those great Strong workouts), improves sleep, regulates the nervous system, and supports gut health. It comes in three primary forms:
- Glycinate: Highly absorbable, great for calm and sleep
- Citrate: Slower absorption, supports gut health and motility
- Malate: Helpful for energy and pain
All forms work — each just has its strengths.
Creatine
Don’t panic — it’s not a bad word. Your body actually produces creatine naturally. Protein from meat and other animal products is converted into amino acids and then into creatine.

Creatine helps your muscles produce more sustainable energy and improves endurance during heavier or longer workouts. Let me clear this up clearly: Creatine does NOT make your muscles bigger. You still have to do the work — creatine just helps your muscles work harder to support your goals.
If you’re looking to boost overall health, performance, and recovery, magnesium and creatine are great places to start.
Bonus: Strong members receive 20% off Thorne products.
As always, we love our whole Strong family and can’t wait to spend time with you and your people this holiday season!
